Chemical Engineer Circular plastics
For our client, TNO Sustainable Process & Energy Systems, we are looking for a Chemical Engineer Circular plastics.
Less CO2 emissions, less use of materials and less plastic litter. Over the past decades, plastic waste treatment policies have promoted incineration combined with energy recovery in order to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills. This approach was successful in the Netherlands, but the policy change towards becoming circular by 2050 means that new technologies are needed to recycle plastics.
One of the growing subjects within TNO is the Circular Plastics program. This program works on the reduction of the carbon footprint of plastics. TNO has developed a selective dissolution process to recycle polymers and additives from plastic waste in a resource-efficient and environmentally-friendly way.
The SPES team in Delft focuses on the development of the Möbius dissolution technology for recycling of plastics. To complement this Plastics team, we are currently seeking a Chemical Engineer to work on the current Möbius development projects for the dissolution and purification of various types of plastics. Aim is to recover not only the polymer(s), but also the valuable additives. Within this team, you will be working side by side with other scientists on the experimental validation of dissolution processes and specifically on the scale-up towards a kilograms/hour pilot plant, including a process safety evaluation.
Who we're looking for
The ideal candidate has a MSc. in chemical engineering (experience with separation technology and/or polymer solutions is a must) and At least 3 years of working experience in a R&D (laboratory) environment (experience in a polymer chemistry company is a plus).
Additionally you have:
- The ability to design process flow diagrams on the basis of laboratory test results and to transform that PFD into a process installation;
- The ability to accurately report the work in writing as well as in the form of integrated input to colleagues for Techno-economical and Life Cycle Analyses.
The position is best suited to an enthusiastic person who is a team player with good interpersonal skills and a proactive communication style. An intrinsic drive to contribute to a sustainable society and an affinity with experimentation, process (equipment) development and process safety. Finally you have the ability to translate high-over goals set within the team into structured experimental programs and guide the lab technician(s) to execute these.
The diverse background in (bio-)process engineering, gas capture and treatment, and thermal energy at TNO gives them a strong position to work towards a sustainable industry and society. Three areas of their current interest are:
- Green chemistry, where they look at utilization of biobased feedstock for production of chemicals and at sustainable chemical processing, e.g. electrochemical conversions.
- Gas treatment, which provides solutions, for the production of renewable gases (biogas, syngas, hydrogen, etc.) and for the capture and utilization of CO2.
- Thermal energy, which covers both energy conversion to heat (and back) as well as heat storage.
