Profile
We are searching for a Lab Informatics Specialist to support digitalization efforts in the research and development laboratory environment. As Lab information Specialist, you will be part of a dynamic team driving discovery, production and characterization of bacterial vaccine candidates. Interaction with other teams and departments, including vaccine development, preclinical and clinical immunology, is essential. During your work you will support the daily use and expansion of our current informatics systems as the key user, alongside helping us identify and implement new capabilities as part of the ongoing digital transformation of our department.
As Lab Informatics Specialist will oversee the Electronic Laboratory Notebook (PE Signals) and Sample Management (BSI) systems, identify opportunities for improvement in user experience (prepare and present How-To examples), data structuring, efficiency, and data quality.
Additionally, you will act as business project lead to pilot and implement systems to further support our R&D activities, for example a registry system for biological entities (such as Genedata Biologics), barcoding solutions for sample traceability and management, solutions for raw data intake, storage, integrity and traceability from laboratory equipment or external partners, and assessing so-called Data Lake solutions to make data accessible throughout the organization. Finally, you will act as key-user towards laboratory personnel, and bridge between corporate IT and vendors.
Your main responsibilities will be:
  • Proactively support digitalization and data science efforts in the department;
  • Mapping and optimizing digital workflows (concept to experimental execution to (meta)analysis);
  • Gather and formalize user requirements for lab informatics systems to provide new or improved capabilities;
  • Organize and manage pilots of lab informatics systems such as bio-registry systems, ELN, sample management, and others;
  • Coordinate the user aspects of the implementation of laboratory informatics systems;
  • Integrate existing and new lab informatics systems;
  • Coordinate application support as the primary contact between users, internal IT, and vendors;
  • Safeguard the quality and accessibility of the data in the laboratory informatics applications;
  • Communicate with external vendors and service providers, schedule and oversee their visits;
  • Provide status updates to stakeholders, including progress on projects, issues, and opportunities;
  • Become a key user of implemented laboratory information system(s) with hands-on experience and capabilities to improve workflows and connect data streams.


Who we're looking for
To successfully fulfill this role, we are looking for candidate with a BSc. degree in the field of informatics/data management and/or biomedical sciences with a focus on data sciences.
You have experence with:
  • Selection, implementation, and support of daily use of laboratory informatics systems;
  • Data management in the field of life sciences including electronic laboratory notebooks, bio-registry systems, sample logistics/management, laboratory information management systems;
  • Business Analytics software such as Spotfire and/or Tableau.

You understand laboratory processes and methods and are capable of documenting these as workflows for IT. For this, you are familiar with IT processes and have working knowledge of scripting language for standard IT solutions such as Python, R, SQL, XML, and JSON. You have excellent communication skills and know how to translate IT-related topics to a diverse user base (including laboratory technicians and scientists). As a person you are driven, self-motivated, independent and quality-oriented.

Department
The Bacterial Vaccines department is working on the discovery- and early development of novel vaccines for bacterial infectious diseases. It strives to address unmet medical needs, such as bacteremia (sepsis) and nosocomial infections. Projects at the Bacterial Vaccines department are primarily structured on scientific- and technical collaboration with external biotechnology partners (governmental and industrial) that are innovative leaders in their field. This working process includes ‘state of the art’ vaccine discovery, with subsequent in vivo evaluation of these vaccine candidates in animal models for immunogenicity and/or efficacy. In addition, manufacturing processes are optimized and established, and the resulting clinical trial material is evaluated in human clinical studies.
