Laboratory Automation Specialist

Vacancy number: A2500022
CLS Services - Zuid-Holland (Nederland)

For one of our clients we are looking for a Laboratory Automation Specialist.

Profile

Are you a multidisciplinary expert who thrives at the intersection of laboratory science, IT, and engineering? We are looking for a Laboratory Automation Specialist to design, implement, and maintain smart, scalable automation solutions that transform complex manual laboratory processes into robust automated workflows. This role combines elements of lab science, software development, and robotics – offering a truly unique and impactful opportunity.
Responsibilities:
  • Design and Implementation: Translate manual lab workflows into efficient, automated solutions in collaboration with laboratory teams, ensuring reliable data flow and process control;
  • System Integration and Development: Configure and program robotic systems (e.g., Tecan, Hamilton, Beckman) and integrate scheduling software to optimize automation workflows;
  • Project Leadership: Lead and manage medium to high-complexity projects independently, from initial design through deployment, following structured development methodologies;
  • Technical Support and Maintenance: Monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain automated systems to ensure continuity and performance in production environments;
  • Documentation and Validation: Validate automated methods and maintain comprehensive documentation aligned with internal and regulatory requirements;
  • Training and Communication: Provide training to laboratory users, and communicate effectively with stakeholders through reports, updates, and user support.

Who we're looking for

The ideal candidate wears multiple hats and combines skills across three domains:
  • Laboratory Specialist – Empathetic and knowledgeable in lab techniques and workflows within a regulatory environment;
  • IT/Software Developer – Able to conceptualize and implement data exchange via networking and software tools;
  • Robotics/Technical Engineer – Capable of designing and maintaining robotic and mechanical lab systems.

The ideal candidate holds a relevant university degree in Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, or a similar field. You are proficient in at least one programming language such as Python, JavaScript, VBA, C#, or R, and either have experience with (or are eager to learn) .NET and Linux environments. Familiarity with robotic liquid handling systems and scheduling software is a plus, as well as the ability to integrate these systems into automated lab workflows. Additionally, you bring strong analytical, communication, and project management skills, combined with a proactive, solution-driven mindset and the ability to think creatively within budget constraints.
